A New Take on the Sticky Bun…Guava & Dulce de Leche Sticky Buns

2016-03-13_17.48.20I saw a recipe on line last week that boasted pizza dough in 20 minutes, so I filed it away and figured that I would test the idea at some point this past weekend. When I decided that I wanted to try out guava in my cinnamon rolls, that became the perfect opportunity.

The quick dough is simplest dough I’ve ever made, so I was skeptical about the end result. But I was WRONG!  As easy as the dough was to mix up, knead, and use, it is remarkably tasty, fluffy, and light…totally NOT what I expected.

Dough

2 c. self rising flour

2 c. Greek yogurt

Yep, that’s it. Stir/mix together.  Turn out onto a floured work surface and knead for about 5 minutes.  Form into a ball and let it rest for 5-10 minutes.

As far as fillings go, you can, of course, fill a cinnamon roll with the standard butter, cinnamon, and sugar, but I had a different idea in mind.  I love guava and guava paste. Granted, guava is an acquired taste or at least an acquired smell and texture.  Many people can’t stand the smell, while others can handle the grainy texture.  Personally, I love it.  I prefer pink guavas, but I’ll even eat the whites ones in pinch.

Having grown up eating a lot of Latin and Caribbean inspired foods, pairing guava with dulce de leche is not outrageous.  Guava & dulce de leche candy is quite popular and available at most supermarkets.

Sticky Bun Filling & Topping

14 oz guava paste

1/4c. canned  dulce de leche

2 TBSP light cream

Heat in the microwave for 30-45 seconds or until soft enough to stir and spread.

Roll or press dough into a square approximately 1/4″ thick.  Spread guava paste over the entire surface.  Roll up and seal the bottom edge.  With a sharp knife, remove the ends.  Slice dough into 1-2″ rounds.

Line a square baking dish/pan with parchment or sprayed foil. Place sticky bun rounds in rows with edges touching.

Melt 1/4 c. butter.  Brush over dough.  Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.  Remove from oven and brush with more melted butter.  Return to oven and bake an additional 10 minutes or until buns are golden brown and done.

Remove from oven. Microwave dulce de leche and cream in the microwave for 20 seconds.  Stir to combine.  Spread over the sticky buns and enjoy!
