Diet Tips for Winter Wellness

Now the summer has passed and the festive season is in full swing you might have given up your healthy diet plans in favor of winter treats. This is understandable, but there’s no reason why the winter can’t also be a time of healthy eating and wellness that keeps you weight and health optimal for going into the new year. Below are some ideas to help you out. 

Keep off the Winter Weight 

It’s common for your weight to increase during the winter. This happens because of the low light levels and the way serotonin works in your system. Normally the chemical is released by the brain when it encounters sunlight, but in low light it gets it from food. 

If you’ve noticed that you crave unhealthy foods in the winter then this is the reason why. Your brain wants to release that feel-good chemical and guides you towards foods that will help. If you replace this craving with exercise your brain will crave that instead.

To keep the weight off in winter fill your stomach with healthy soups that are low calorie and keep down a meals overall calorie count. Then exercise to release serotonin to satisfy your brain craving. 

Get on Your Grill 

Did you say grill? In the middle of winter? Hello? Isn’t it minus zero outside with frost all over the place? Most people assume a grill is a summer thing preserved for BBQs and garden parties, this is not the whole truth. 

Grills come in all shapes and sizes and you can get ones that work indoors as well. This is perfect for grilling your food in all seasons, including midwinter. But why is it more healthy to grill your food rather than fry it or bake it in the oven? 

The oil you normally use to fry your food is very unhealthy, it can clog up your arteries and contribute to weight gain. Instead why not marinade your protein and vegetable lightly in olive oil and grill them indoors for a carnivore diet meal plan.

Practice Intermittent Fasting 

Intermittent fasting works on the theory that it’s not what you eat but when you eat that makes a difference to your weight. If you’re in the habit of eating heavy foods late at night, for instance, you’re much less likely to keep the weight off. 

Conversely if you don’t eat or drink anything substantial after around 7pm you will give your body more time to digest the day’s foods and wake up lighter and healthier. The reason is the body releases chemicals for digestion when food enters the stomach, this makes digestion less efficient if you eat late at night. 

If it seems difficult to follow such strict guidelines there’s a silver lining. Through the daytime hours set by your intermittent diet plan you can essentially eat whatever you like – within reason of course. 

Get Your 5 a Day 

Everyone had heard of the 5 a day rule but we don’t always know why this is beneficial for our health and wellbeing. The 5 a day guideline comes from. The World Health Organisation who suggest this is a realistic portion of fruit and vegetables to eat daily to protect your health. 

Fruits and vegetables are the best source of vitamins and minerals for your body and they are even better than supplements that promise excellent results. The vitamins and minerals you get from. These foods serve to protect you from heart disease, cancers, obesity, and winter weight gain.

Although the WHO suggests 5 a day is appropriate the reality is that more is better, perhaps 7 a day. When you do your weekly shopping think about your intake of fruits and vegetables and plan in advance. But enough 5 a day items to keep you healthy for the week.

Shop Online 

When you go you go to the supermarket it can be easy to get carried away, especially if you haven’t eaten or you don’t have a set plan for what to buy. It’s much better to shop online. If you do go to the supermarket, however, make sure you know what you’re buying and be disciplined. 

Shopping online is much better, it means you can effectively plan your diet as you shop and you’re less tempted to indulge in treats that are carefully presented to you. Shopping online gives you more control over what you buy and helps you better optimize your diet. 

This winter especially there’s another good reason to shop online, the coronavirus. The supermarkets are a haven for the transmission  of the virus and it’s not one you want to catch – even if you are generally healthy. Instead have you wholesome winter shopping delivered to your door.
